A GUIDE TO CHOOSING YOUR RING

Choosing a ring is a big decision, and it should not feel confusing. Here I share what I have learnt over 20 years at the bench: how to choose a design, what to know about diamonds and metals, how to look after your ring, and what to expect when you visit.

BUYING GUIDES

WHERE TO START

Start with how the ring will be worn. Think about your daily life, the shape of your hand and the styles you already love. Then choose the stone shape and setting that suit it. Our two guides below walk you through the choices step by step.

DIAMONDS

THE FOUR Cs, SIMPLY EXPLAINED

Cut is how well the diamond is shaped and polished, and it has the biggest effect on sparkle.

Colour is graded from D (colourless) to Z. Many people find a near-colourless stone looks lovely once it is set.

Clarity describes tiny natural features inside the stone. Most are invisible without magnification.

Carat is weight, not size. Two stones of the same carat can look different depending on their cut and shape.

Every diamond comes with a grading certificate, so you can see exactly what you are buying.

METALS

CHOOSING YOUR METAL

18K yellow gold is warm and classic, and it suits most skin tones.

18K white gold has a cool, bright look. It is usually rhodium plated, which can be refreshed over time.

18K rose gold has a soft, romantic tone that comes from its copper content.

Platinum is naturally white, dense and durable. It develops a soft satin patina with wear, which can be polished back.

CARE AND RESIZING

LOOKING AFTER YOUR RING

Clean your ring gently with warm water, a little mild soap and a soft brush, then dry it with a soft cloth. Take it off for heavy work, the gym and swimming, and store it on its own so it does not scratch other pieces.

Have the setting checked once a year so the stone stays secure.

Fingers change with the seasons, so a ring can sometimes need resizing. Your first resize on a Valenzo ring is complimentary if you ask within 60 days and the change is up to two sizes. Some designs, such as eternity bands, may not be resizable.

YOUR APPOINTMENT

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE MEET

Your appointment is free and relaxed. Meet me at the studio in Surfers Paradise, or by video or phone from anywhere.

Bring any pictures, inspiration, loose stones or pieces you would like us to match. We talk through the stone, shape, metal and setting, then I work from drawings and a 3D design so you can see your ring before it is made.
